Statement from the Director

As we enter into the third decade of our existence in Uganda, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS is proud to have contributed to the multi-disciplinary HIV research achievements of this country and globally.

This work has led to valuable insights into the course of the epidemic, made major contributions to the development of new HIV prevention strategies, better care and helped to inform policy and practice of HIV/AIDS Control in Uganda and elsewhere in Africa.

In addition, the Unit has contributed to the human and infrastructure capacity development in the areas where we have worked and elsewhere in Uganda and in the region. We are grateful to our local and international partners, the Governments of Uganda and the UK, without whom we would not have made these achievements.

We look forward to continued collaborations and partnerships as we strive for an AIDS free world.

Professor Pontiano Kaleebu, MD, PhD

MISSION STATEMENT AND SPECTRUM OF ACTIVITIES BILATERAL AGREEMENT

The MRC/UVRI Uganda research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the Ugandan Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research of HIV(human immunodeficiency virus) infection and AIDS(acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). The Unit is an institution of the UK Medical Research Council (MRC), integrated into the Uganda Virus Research Institute(UVRI).

MISSION

The Unit has the mission to conduct research on HIV disease and related infections to facilitate their control in Uganda and elsewhere in Africa. Specifically it is expected to investigate the determinants of HIV infection and subsequent disease progression in the African context; to identify and evaluate new strategies aiming at the prevention of HIV infection as well as interventions aiming to alleviate the clinical and social consequences of the infection. The results, it is hoped will make major contributions to the formulation of health policy in Uganda and else where. more
