LOCALISATION AND COLLABORATIVE LINKS
Much of the research is conducted at the field stations and research clinics at Masaka and Entebbe Districts. Some clinical work is also being performed with partner institutions in Kampala.
The Unit works in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, with public health services, hospitals and NGOs in Uganda, and with major academic institutions in Uganda, elsewhere in Africa and in the North.
DISCIPLINES INVOLVED
The work is multidisciplinary, reflecting the wide ranging nature of the problems caused by HIV. Activities range from virology, and immunology to clinical studies and intervention trials, epidemiological studies, behavioural research and health economy studies, supported by strong statistical and laboratory services and a community development programme.
HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE
Within the budgetary limits given by its mandate to conduct research on HIV/AIDS, the Unit also provides general health care to its study populations. For some of these, the Unit has become the major provider of health care, including antiretroviral treatment (ART). In Entebbe and Masaka districts, the Unit has made substancial contributions to the infrastructure of the health care system.
CAPACITY BUILDING
The Unit contributes to the capacity building of HIV/AIDS researchers in Uganda through formal and informal training. The training is mainly provided to scientific staff of the Unit and its partner institutions. Support includes participation in degree courses, short courses and professional attachments. more
