uganda Virus Research Institute, office
The Institute, now renamed Uganda Virus Research Institute, suffered adversely with damaging repercussions on its infrastructure, research policy direction and personnel.
As a result of investments over the last 20 years, the Institute now comprises rich partnerships of research groups and disciplines, with internationally recognized scientists and high-quality laboratories.
These have involved collaborative research with; The Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP), The Medical Research Council (MRC-UK) setting up the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS, The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) setting up CDC-Uganda, and the International Aids Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) establishing IAVI/UVRI at the institute campus.
Within Uganda, UVRI is indeed unique in its capacity for inter-disciplinary research broadly encompassing communicable diseases of public health importance.
The MRC-HIV/AIDS Unit at Uganda Virus Research Institute has conducted a lot of research that influenced health policy, improved and expanded infrastructure for offices, laboratories and other amenities.
It has trained many Ugandans at PhD, Masters Degree level and provided apprenticeship as part of human resource development. It has been very instrumental in research collaboration networking both internationally and nationally.
This would not have been possible without the funding of the Government of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland and other well wishers. The government and the people of Uganda are grateful to MRC (UK) for its role as a development partner. back
