Anatoli Kamali is a clinical epidemiologist and the deputy director of the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS. He heads the HIV Prevention research programme and is also the Head of the Department of Epidemiology at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), and an Honorary Lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). He holds a first degree in Medicine and Surgery from Makerere University, Kampala, and an MSc degree in Public Health in Developing Countries from LSHTM.
Anatoli Kamali has been involved in HIV/STI research in Uganda since 1989, initially on studies on population dynamics of HIV-1 transmission and associated risk factors, and later as principal investigator for a large scale intervention trial to determine the impact on HIV infection of a behavioural change intervention, both alone and in combination with improved STI management. He led various studies in preparation of safety and efficacy trials of vaginal microbicides and HIV vaccines, and was the protocol chair of a study to establish clinical laboratory reference ranges in adults at multiple sites in Africa, sponsored by the International Aids Vaccine Initiative.

He co-directed a trial to determine the effectiveness of fluconazole prophylaxis in preventing cryptococcal disease among individuals with advanced HIV disease, and several phase II trials of vaginal microbicides. He iwas the Ugandan lead investigator of a multi-centre trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a vaginal microbicide, conducted with the international Microbicides Development Programme (MDP).
He has served as a member of the International Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) of the Division of AIDS at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for various NIH funded trials in Africa, and as WHO temporary advisor on sexual and reproductive health.He is currently a member of the Safety Evaluation Commitee for International Partnership for Microbicide studies. back
