HIV Care Research Programme

Head of Programme: Paula Munderi, MBChB, MRCP(UK)

The years 2000 - 2004 marked the beginning of widespread introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Africa. At that time there was a need for national treatment programmes to begin, even though it was not clear how ART provision could be extended beyond a few centres of excellence in large cities where resources were available to deliver ART in accordance with international guidelines. Collaboration between researchers and programme managers was required to find solutions for the many challenges involved in increasing ART coverage in Africa and improving the health of people infected with HIV. The MRC/UVRI Uganda Unit contributed to this work in many ways, by conducting clinical trials, performing operational research and participating in policy development.
