Research output: Although the main purpose of the COD Project is to support research projects by enhancing the acceptability of the Programme’s research activities in Kyamulibwa subcounty, the project made a contribution to the peer-reviewed literature with the publication in 2009 of a paper reviewing its experience of two decades of experience in community engagement in health research. Community engagement has been essential in implementation of research project activities and has avoided disruption to the community by taking into consideration ethical, social, cultural, political and economical factors. Judged by criteria of longevity, community acceptance, and scientific output, community engagement in the Kyamulibwa research programme has been successful.
Conclusion: The project has made an essential contribution to facilitate the acceptability of the research activities in the subcounty whilst at the same time providing much needed health services to the public, including health education, general health care and HIV voluntary counselling and testing services in the study area.
