Unit Governance

MRC/UVRI Uganda Research unit on AIDS is administratively run by the unit Director with two other senior administrators i.e. The Deputy Unit Director and the Director of operations.

The Deputy Unit Director contributes to the scientific leadership of the Unit and deputises for the Unit Director in his absence. The deputy Director directly reports to the Unit Director and has close working relationships with other members of the Unit’s Senior Management Team and senior scientific staff. Dr Anatoli Kamali a long time staff of the Unit currently holds this post. He at the same time is the leader of the Epidemiology and Prevention Research Programme.

The Director of Operations provides general and professional management leadership. He reports to the Unit Director and provides leadership and management to the Unit’s operational services (Financial, Administrative, HR, IT, Technical and support departments) as well as ensuring governance and accountability in line with MRC policy and local laws. This position is currently held by Mr Simon Belcher who previously worked at the MRC Gambia and at EDCTP in The Hague as the Director of Finance.

The Unit also has an expanded Unit Management Committee which comprises of the Unit Director, Deputy Unit Director, and Director of Operations, all heads of programmes, section heads and the Unit senior Administrator. This is an advisory committee supporting the Unit Director in the effective and efficient management of the Unit, providing strategic leadership and direction, providing advice and support to the Unit Director to inform decision making.

The Unit has a Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), which meets annually. The mandate of the SAC is to advise the Director and senior staff on the scientific direction and strategy of the Unit, to enable maintain scientific excellence . The SAC is made members with broad expertise.

The unit also has various sections that support research activities at various levels, and these include:
- Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory Services (CDLS)
- Data and Statistics Section
- Operations Section ( Finance and Administration, HR, IT,Estates)
- Communications and Engagement Section
- Bioinformatics Section
