Philippe Mayaud is a Professor of Infectious Diseases & Reproductive Health of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (Faculty of Infectious & Tropical Diseases, ITD); and the Head of the HIV Research Programme at the MCR/UVRI & LSHTM Research unit in Uganda which he joined in 2019. Having trained in France as a general practitioner, then an infectious and tropical diseases doctor, he worked in French Guiana and Dominica for four years; he obtained a Masters of Sciences (MSc) from the LSHTM in Clinical Tropical Medicine, and joined the LSHTM in 1991. He directed HIV intervention and research programmes in Mwanza, Tanzania, for 6 years before returning to work in London.

A clinician turned epidemiologist, Philippe has a particular interest in HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STI), and bas conducted research in many parts of Western, Eastern and Southern Africa, but also in China and Brazil, where he has additional research projects in arbovirus epidemiology research.

Philippe holds honorary positions as Visiting Professor at the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) and the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa).
