The promise of the ring for women's HIV prevention

The IPM 027 phase III trial, also known as the “Ring Study”, was a multicentre, randomised, double blind, placebo controlled safety and efficacy trial. A total of 1959 healthy, sexually active, HIV negative women aged 18-45 and at risk of acquiring HIV volunteered and were enrolled at 7 research centres in South Africa and Uganda. In Uganda, the study was conducted at the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS Masaka clinical trial site where 197 women were enrolled.
